why the empty page is the point

morning pages work because nobody reads them, including you. three pages of whatever is there, then the day. a screen that keeps yesterday's pages in front of you turns the practice into a record, and a record makes you write for a reader. shizumu starts every day on an empty page. yesterday is in memory, searchable, and it stays out of the way unless you go and look.

the page does not know it is morning. it opens, you type, and a word count at the foot of the page tells you when you are near the 750 words people usually count as three pages. that is all it has to say.

who it fits, and who it doesn't

if you want the ritual held for you, with a timer, a reminder and a tally of mornings, there are apps built around that, and 750words is the best known. shizumu fits people who want the page and nothing else in the morning, on a device they own, with a way back to the rare line that turns out to matter.

what the page does when something surfaces

most of the three pages are fuel. once in a while a sentence matters. you pin it, and it becomes a pointer back into that morning's page. a trail is for a project, not a day: a book, the decision you are circling, anything you'll come back to tomorrow. choose a trail and the page picks up context: the pins you already kept there, already on the page. everything else lives in memory: search it, or open one trail, one date, pages, or pins.

on a phone, a laptop, or both

it runs on linux and windows. android is a closed test on google play, and the android page is where you ask to join, which suits a morning pages app on the sofa. if you searched for morning pages on apple devices: mac is a beta download and iphone is a testflight beta, and the browser demo opens on any of them, so you can see the page before deciding anything.

the writing stays on the device you wrote it on unless you turn sync on. sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted: the relay holds what it cannot read, and neither can we. hosted sync is free on two devices, and your own relay is free on every device (pricing). more on what the relay can and cannot see.

moving old pages over

pages written somewhere else paste in as text. most people do not bring old morning pages at all, and the practice does not need them. if you want them out again later, every page exports as a markdown file into a folder you choose, and settings can make a full backup of the database.
