a second brain app you write in

shizumu is a second brain you write in, not one you build: a private writing app where you think by writing, pin the lines that matter, and get them back when you return to the project.

what is a second brain for

a second brain should give back what you already thought, at the moment you need it. the usual way there is to build it first: databases, links, a place decided for every note. people describe where that ends up. a dozen connected databases, and the deadlines still slip. the structure becomes the work, and the thinking waits for it.

how does shizumu keep what you think

every page starts empty. you write, and the thinking happens while the sentences get written. when a line matters, you pin it. a pin points back into the page where the thought happened: your thinking happens on the page, and the pins are where you left it. everything else stays in memory, searchable.

how does it give it back

a trail is for a project, not a day: a book, a job search, anything you come back to tomorrow. choose a trail and the page picks up context: the pins you already kept there, already on the page. you do not go looking for your notes; the project brings them. open one trail and read its pins, and months of thinking on one topic fit on a screen.

what do you set up first

nothing to structure first, nowhere to file it. the first sentence is the first thing that happens. when one topic should keep growing, a book for example, make it a continuous trail: one living document, the one place the empty page is deliberately turned off, with pins to keep it from becoming a wall to re-read. the docs explain how a page finds its way back without a folder.

can you try it before installing it

the whole app runs in your browser with a few weeks of writing already in it: try it, pin a line, open a trail, and see what comes back.

what holds on every platform

shizumu is free, on linux, android, and windows. your writing stays on your device. sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted: the relay holds what it cannot read, and neither can we. the app and the relay are open source: apache-2.0 on the client, agpl-3.0-or-later on the relay.

it will not write for you, because the writing is the thinking.
